I woke up in the middle of the night, and heard a strange noise, like someone was walking inside my house.
Could someone really be inside my house?
My heart was beating faster, i was really nervous and quite scared as you can imagine.
Those few seconds that i lay there thinking about what i could do, should i get out of bed quietly as i can and look for a weapon of sort to protect me?
Or get out of bed and fight him?
My car keys had the panic button on, i knew that i should be keeping a spare with me by bedside, but i thought that nothing bad would ever happen to me, it would always happen to someone else.
So i went the more safer route i thought, i had to get to those keys.
The thing was, that those keys were hanging on the wall near the living room, which was a few meters away from the kitchen.
I had to get to them, i had to alert the security company that i needed help.
I couldn’t phone them, as this intruder would hear me speak, and that would be the end of me.
Slowly i lifted myself up, so that i could get a look around the room to see if i could get to anything useful. there was a bit of light coming in from the right side of my room, the curtains weren’t properly closed again. i had to sleep in total darkness, just a bit of light and id be wide awake.
Coming home so late from work, then still having to cook was not on the menu tonight. i got a burger from Joey’s, and bought a 6 pack of cold light, only drank 2 though.
My closet was to the left, i knew there was nothing in there, i thought i could grab a coat hanger or two and use that as a weapon, but decided against it. then i remembered there was a cricket bat in here somewhere. Bettys kid came over a few weekends back to use it.
Where did i put that dam thing?
The footsteps were getting more louder, it was as if they were getting closer to me. this person who ever he was, was taking his time. he was looking for something. no doubt about that. he wasn’t here for money otherwise he would have been in my room by now, wouldn’t he?
Slowly removing the duvet from me, i began to move my left and then right leg off the bed, my heart was now racing.
My hands were starting to shake. either it was my time to go , or i would live to fight another day. either way i needed to find the bat and quickly.
I managed to get my feet touching the floor. luckily i had a small carpet next to the bed which helped to keep any noise down. i then put my left hand on the bed and started to lift myself up, trying to bed quite as possible.
As i got up a saw a small flash of light, he must of had a torch with him.
Where is that bat? come on Jack where is it?
Think.
Its under the bed. i remember putting it there now, i wanted it out of the way, i was scared that i would bump into it when i needed to go to the toilet during the most ungodly hours.
Kneeling down i started to feel for it, left and right, but nothing. maybe it was on the other side of the bed?
I moved into a lying position, and started to crawl, moving a bit quicker than i needed to, he hadn’t heard me yet, there was still time.
I felt something feel like wood , yes, that is the bat i said to myself.
I slowly started to drag it to me.
I eventually got it out and started to make my way to the door. i still didn’t know what i was going to do, but at least i could protect myself now.
Looking to the right towards the living room i could see that he indeed had a flash light with him, he was going through my draws, definitely looking for something.
My keys were about 5 meters from me, hanging on the wall.
It was now or never.
Moving as slowly as i could, i started walking towards the keyholder. all the while keeping my eyes on the intruder. he was in all black from head to toe. seemed to be about 1.7 or 1.8 meters tall, couldn’t really make out as he was bending over the whole time, moving from draw to draw.
Why hadn’t he gone to my office if he was looking what i think he was looking for? guess he didn’t know my layout, figured he’d just search the whole place.
As i got closer to my keys, i bumped my bat against the wall.
You stupid idiot, what have you done now.
Without thinking i jumped for the keys and pressed the panic button.
I had done it, they would be on the way. trouble was, so would he, and he was much more closer than they were.
The intruder turned around, almost surprised that i was there.
What the hell i thought, i picked up my bat and started to run at him, this was my chance to catch him.
It almost took him by surprise, before i knew it, i was within striking distance, i swung as hard as i could. but missed.
The intruder ducked and punched me in the stomach.
I took another swing, this time it struck him on the right arm. he yelled in anguish.
He then took another swing at me, but could only connect with my bat.
“Shit, shit” he said
I took that as a sign and swung another, this time i hit him straight in the head.
He went down, as soon as the bat struck him.
I was safe, i had somehow done this.
My stomach was hurting really bad, my hand went instinctively on my stomach. it felt wet. i looked down and saw that my hand was covered in blood.
He didn’t punch me, he stabbed me.
When a woke up again i was in hospital, the doctor had said that if the security company hadn’t come when they did, i would be dead.
It turns out the intruder was at the wrong house, he was supposed to go next door. that’s where the documents that he was after where. Randy who was a lawyer was going after his boss. the cops told me they he enough on him to be able to put him away for life.
They sent in this guy thinking that it would be easy, Randy wasn’t at home, he was out of town for work. this kid was new on the job and wanted to prove himself to the boss.
And that was his mistake, letting a rookie do a job that should have been done by a professional. guess the boss didn’t know anyone, he must have just hired some random dude.
Lady luck was surely on my side, but it was more than that. how could so many random things fall into place at once?
Guess i should just take the win and learn from this, no doubt.
Once i was back at home, i made sure that a panic button was always at my bedside table, and another on my set of keys. i put a new security gate on all my doors, burglar guards on my windows and even got a quote for security sensors for outside, that could pick up any movement and alert me at once.
I would never take my safety for granted again.
