“I’m not here to take the place of your dad, no one can replace who he was to you both, ok?”
“I love your mom and I want to take things even further with her than I have now. I’m not going to make you a promise that I know I won’t be able to keep. But what I can promise the two of you, is that I love her with all my heart and if you’ll let me, i’ll bring you under my wing and protect you with my life, I don’t see you as adopted. I see you as if you are my own flesh and blood. I love both of you, you hear me.”
“I want to ask your mom to marry me”
Stacy looked up at brad, with a look of surprise on her face. mom had dated a lot of men since dad died, all had made empty promises. they all ran away when things got too difficult for them. made the same excuses.
Now Brad wanted to marry her, spend the rest of his life with her and us.
Did he just say he wants to adopt us?
Brad was different than all the other men mom brought home, she wanted to give in, trust him, but what if he just went back on his word like the others? She was the older sister, Amy already loved Brad, it was easier for her, she was too young to understand what had happened before.
“Yay’ I’m so excited, when are you going to get married? Can I be the flower girl?” Amy said excitedly.
“Are you sure the girls are going to be ok with this?” Brad asked Angie,
“The girls will be fine; Amy already loves you. Stacy will come around, just give her time.”
They have been dating for about 9 months now, it has been the longest relationship that she has been in since Tony passed away from lung cancer. Years and years of smoking two boxes of cigarettes a day finally caught up with him.
Brads longest was just under a year with a girl from the cape, she was in her late twenties, she wanted to keep things the way they were while Brad wanted to settle down, be more serious.
When he met Angie at Joeys 9 months ago, he knew she was the one, she was sitting at the end of the bar. he figured she was just getting the next round for friends, there was a about 15 to 20 girls having a good time at the end of the bar.
He went up to her, as he got closer, he went blank, his mouth opened but words couldn’t come out. she was so beautiful he thought. She had long brown hair, blue eyes, had a red top with a black miny skirt which showed off those long legs.
“Hey buddy, if you’re going to say something, I think the time is now, i don’t want something to fly inside you,”
Brad had to think fast.
“You are right, see the thing is I had a whole plan, walking up to you, I knew what I wanted to say, but when I saw you, I mean you literally took my breath away, no joke”
“And?” she replied
“Well, I just wanted to say, that you are the most beautiful woman that I have ever seen. You probably get that a lot, but I figured it couldn’t hurt to tell you again”
“It doesn’t,”
She smiled at him while saying it, her left hand went up to start playing with her hair.
He just kept looking at her with puppy eyes. He broke his train of thought when he introduced himself to her.
Pointing to the tables at the end of the bar, he said.
“So, Angie, is it a birthday, someone getting married?”
‘Oh, yes, Sarah’s turning 30, this is our second stop, we tried Bob’s, that new place a couple blocks away from here, you heard of it.
“Yes, been meaning to go”
“Well don’t, it sucks, just a bunch of school kids in there, the lot are already drunk at this hour, can you believe it?”
“Well at that age, anything is possible”
“Anyway, we’ve all had a ruff year and decided to make the most of it”
Brad asked her if she wanted something to drink, he knew that she had ordered a whole round but took a chance anyway.
“A vodka lime and lemonade is my go to” she replied. while he got a double Jameson.
“Brad, I know you really like my mom a lot, we like you to. Um, are you sure you want to do this, I mean adopting us, do you really mean it?”
“Of course I do, your mom and I have talked about this a lot, we have already started the process, we, well, I just wanted to see what the two of you thought about this, this is not me replacing your dad, it’s just me being another dad, that’s all”
“You can still keep your dads surname, talk about him whenever you want, ok.”
“Yea, i want to keep dads name, nothing against you, but its the only way that i think i can keep him with me”
“ I get it” he replied.
“And he will always be with you, he’s in your heart, he is with you wherever you go”
“I know, its just… i really i miss him”
Brad went up closer to her and gave her the biggest hug that he could give her. as they both let go of each other Stacy asked him if they had a date set up yet.
“In a couple months, we haven’t set a date yet, but it’s going to be sometime in summer, thinking around February. what you think?”
“Febs fine, but you do know that is at the beginning of the school year right? why not the beginning of Jan?”
“We thought about it hey, but the place that your mom wants to get married at, only has an opening then, their next available date is only in June”
I know what he says is coming from his heart, mom literally just went through a really bad break up a couple months back, ok, its more like 9 months, but you get it right? it’s too soon, is it?
Can’t mom just wait a little bit longer before she moves on. I know it might seem selfish. it’s just I can’t go through another breakup like the last one with Oscar.
Who had to pick up mom? I had to.
I don’t want to go through that again.
If Brad means what he says, then I am going to just trust him.
Plus Amy will be really upset with me if I don’t approve of this, she is so into this, its unreal. Already looking through magazines with mom, as if she is the maid of honor lol.
I am really happy for mom, I hope this works out for her, she deserves this.
I hope you are ok with this dad, you really loved mom, wish you were still here with us.
We need you.
I need you.
Love you, always and forever.
I actually got tears in my eyes while reading the last bit.
